
2024 Celebration of Women in Medicine and Science
The School of Medicine hosted the 2024 Celebration of Women in Medicine and Science on Tuesday, September 10, 2024 with Deena McRae, associate vice president (AVP) for Academic Health Sciences (AHS) in the University of California Health division office.
This event was co-hosted by the UCR School of Medicine Office of Faculty Development and the Office of Strategic Initiatives.
Keynote Speaker · Deena S. McRae, MD

Deena S. McRae, MD is the associate vice president for academic health sciences at the UC Health division office.
McRae leads and provide strategic direction to advance UC’s academic health sciences mission and goals of the UC Health system and individual campuses. UC operates the largest public health sciences instruction program in the nation, with approximately 16,000 health sciences students and trainees across 20 schools on seven campuses. Schools include medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health, dentistry, optometry and veterinary medicine.
At the UC Irvine School of Medicine, McRae oversaw the accreditation of the institution, as well as UC Irvine’s 72 ACGME-approved residency and fellowship programs. As an associate clinical professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, she provided care at UC Irvine Health in Orange and the Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center in Long Beach, where she also served as associate chief of staff for education and the designated education officer.
McRae earned a bachelors degree at the University of Pennsylvania and completed both medical school and psychiatry residency training at UC Irvine. She is a 2022 graduate of the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine program.

WelcomeKeynote SpeakerDeena McRae, MD - Associate Vice President for Academic Health Sciences at UC Health Turning the Tide: Elevating Women Physicians of Color through Inclusive Innovation Dr. McRae will discuss the current climate and unique challenges faced by women physicians of color with an exploration of effective approaches to create an inclusive and supportive environment. An overview of research conducted on the wellbeing and career satisfaction of women physicians of color will be presented, which includes data-driven strategies to recruit, retain, and elevate this important group of clinicians. This will be followed by a panel of physicians at different points in their training who will describe their own personal experiences and perspectives, as well as provide guidance on how to persevere, thrive, and flourish in the medical profession. Attendees will leave equipped with actionable steps to advocate for and empower future generations of diverse women physicians, driving meaningful and impactful change in the medical field.
